Spring break may be a time for students and families to get away and relax, but it is also a time for relatives to be on guard. Given the number of people on the go, spring break presents a unique opportunity for scammers to pitch family emergency scams (better known as โgrandparent scamsโ) to loved ones back home.In the ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฆ, a suspect calls (or sometimes e-mails) an elderly resident claiming to be a โgrandchild.โ If it is a phone call, itโs often late at night or early in the morning when most people arenโt thinking clearly. The caller states they are in jail or the hospital and need money. The โgrandparentโ may be asked to send money to a friend, via money order, who will then pay their bail or hospital bill, or the caller will offer to send a courier to pick the cash up. A criminal can sometimes uncover enough personal information about their targets, which makes the impersonations more believable. In the ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฆ, the suspect may call to tell you a family member has been in a car accident, and they need information for the ambulance or to be identified by the police. This could be giving information about the car they drive, what they look like, or what the family member is wearing to make it more believable that they are with your loved one. In your emotional state from the call, the suspects could ask you to meet them somewhere or ask you to send money so your loved one can be taken care of.๐๐ ๐๐๐ wire money, make arrangements to deliver funds or meet a stranger in a certain location until you confirm the situation is legitimate. If you believe you may have received this type of call, please follow these steps:- Call the family member directly to confirm the story.- DO NOT provide any personal, financial, or other information to anyone over the phone.- Contact police immediately if you receive any phone call requesting money be wire transferred or picked up at your residence or an alternate location. ... The Voorhees Township Police Department wants to remind everyone to plan ahead for St. Patrick's Day weekend activities. This day is known to be one of the deadliest on the roads, and with it being on Sunday, March 17th this year, weekend festivities may include alcohol. It's crucial to have a designated driver who will not drink at all, to ensure no one gets behind the wheel after drinking. Here are some tips for sober driving: - Designate a sober driver in advance.- Call a sober friend or relative to drive. - Take the keys away from an impaired driver if they insist on driving. - Use the Voorhees Township and Uber ride-share program which can be found here voorheesnj.com/2023/11/22/voorhees-saves-lives-2/ Remember, safety on the roads is everyone's responsibility. Let's celebrate St. Patrick's Day weekend responsibly and make sure we all get home safely. ... See MoreSee Less
